Getting started

  1. 1

    Draw the floor plan

Draw the facility in your CAD tool, such as QCAD or AutoCAD, and save it as a DXF. You can also trace over an image of an existing plan.

  2. 2

    Open it in BarrierSIM

Open the DXF. BarrierSIM keeps your project in the same file, so you can go back to CAD at any time.

  3. 3

    Calibrate to scale

Use the calibration step to set a known distance, so everything is measured in metres.

  4. 4

    Add barriers

Mark walls, doors and screens as barriers, and choose the material and thickness of each.

  5. 5

    Add sources

Place each radioactive source and set its isotope, activity and name.

  6. 6

    Run the simulation

Press Run to see the dose-rate heat map and isodose contours. Adjust barriers and run again until every area meets its limit.

  7. 7

    Export the specification

Export the barrier specification and dose map for the architect and the regulator.
